Marks & Spencer has named former Asda chief Roger Burnley as a non-executive director, a role he is set to take up on 1 December.
Burnley previously served as chief executive at Asda until 2021. Before that, he held the role of chief operating officer.
He was also retail and operations director at Sainsbury’s until 2017 and currently serves as a non-executive director at Pets at Home.
Burnley joins the board following a period of recovery for M&S, which experienced a major cyberattack in April this year that halted online sales for around six weeks.
Despite the attack, the retailer is continuing with its turnaround plan, which began in 2022.
M&S chairman Archie Norman said: “Roger brings extensive experience in the food retail industry and supply chain transformation, which will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of our plan to reshape M&S for growth.”
Burnley added: “M&S is a much-loved brand which I have always admired as setting the standard in UK retail, and it is a privilege to be joining such an engaged board.
“Much progress has been made through the Reshaping for Growth strategy, but there remains so much opportunity, and I am looking forward to supporting the leadership team to capitalise on that in the years ahead.”
