As the market for functional ingredients grows, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has said that it plans to sell more beers with added protein or electrolytes.
Part of a growing trend, the company joins a wave of new products attempting to enter the wellness sphere.
Most recently, AB InBev entered this territory via a new version of its Spaten beer with added protein, released in the Brazilian market.
A non-alcoholic beverage with 10 grams of protein as well as collagen, the drink marked the first of its kind in the company’s portfolio. It retails for roughly double the price of the original beer.
Elsewhere, AB InBev, which owns beer brands including Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois, Bud Light, Beck’s, Hoegaarden and Leffe, said it would appeal to more frugal beer shoppers with cheaper beers in smaller pack sizes.
It further added that it planned to attract more drinkers through the launch of new non-alcoholic beers, which remain a major opportunity.
Moving beyond beer, the company said it was going to increase its focus on energy drinks and cocktails, both of which are growing areas in the market.
Most recently, this was evidenced by investment in Cutwater in the US market, a canned cocktail brand which was named the fastest-growing alcohol brand in the US this July.
According to Circana data, sales of the RTD grew by 104% over the last 12 months to July, led by the Lime Margarita drink.
