Naked Wines and Virgin Wines have released Christmas trading updates, with the former calling its performance “solid”, while the latter went for “strong”.

Naked saw losses narrow, with year-on-year revenue down -10.2% in the 13 weeks to December 30 (or -8.9% at constant currency). The company said this was an improvement on the -15.1% slip in the first half of its financial year, which covers the 26 weeks to September 30. Revenue per member was up by 2% in the 13-week period, that company said.

At Virgin, revenue increased by 6.7% year-on year during the six weeks to December 27, while the company also reported that sales were up 9% in December 2024 versus December 2023 to the “highest level since the Covid-19 lockdowns”.

In an overview of its H1 performance, the six months to December 27, Virgin reported revenue broadly in line with the same period last year at £34.1 million (H1 2024: £34.3m).

Naked Wines CEO Rodrigo Maza, CEO said: “We are pleased with our performance during the important peak season, which was solid and featured improving trends and positive signals from KPIs supported by our strategic initiatives and testing plan. We are tracking in line with full year expectations, and look forward to providing a further update in March, including a plan focused on shareholder value creation.”

Meanwhile, Virgin Wines CEO Jay Wright highlighted strong year-on-year growth over the key six-week Christmas trading period despite the continued sector and macro-economic headwinds.

“We delivered increased levels of new customers, improved our operating cost per case and continued to drive high growth through our commercial channel,” he said. “We continue to increase market share thanks to the loyalty of our customers, our outstanding customer service and the quality of our wines.”
