Charles Hawkins, who had been a figure in the UK wine trade for over 50 years, passed away this month.
Known most recently for his work at Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies (ABS), Hawkins had a keen interest in Burgundy and the Southern Hemisphere, with South Africa at the fore.
He was the founder of Charles Hawkins & Partners, which merged with ABS in 2013. Hawkins remained part of the sales team until his retirement in 2023.
Michael Awin, managing partner at ABS, said: “It was with great sadness that I learned of Charles’ passing. He was an old school wine-man and dedicated his life to unearthing and introducing wines to the UK market, many of which remain there today. His first passion was always France, but a chance meeting with Charles Back from South Africa, led to a new direction.
“His dedication to both his suppliers and his customers was always paramount. When we merged Charles Hawkins & Partners into ABS in 2013, his primary concern was not himself but ensuring that his suppliers and customers would be retained and well looked after.
“He will be remembered with great affection and respect by all who had the privilege of working with him, he leaves behind a lasting legacy, reflected in the wines he championed and the relationships that he built.”
The Hawkins family added: “Charles Hawkins, a celebrated figure in the wine trade for over 50 years, died peacefully on 10 December 2025. Known for his old school gentlemanly manner, larger than life personality and his flamboyant dress sense, which included red socks and extremely colourful ties. He leaves behind his five children: Nick, Jess, Thomas, Charlotte and Hugo.”
A memorial service will be held for Hawkins at Uppingham Church, LE15 9QH, on 2 January at noon.
