Scottish supplier Inverarity Morton is aiming to cash in on the upcoming barbecue season with the launch of a range of wines called The Pitmaster.

The wines are made in collaboration with producers on Australia’s Limestone Coast and take inspiration from the men “that turned barbecue cooking into a craft”.

Ian Cumming, commercial director at Inverarity Morton, said: “The Pitmasters were guardians of the BBQ, men who mastered a style of cooking that was born out of necessity.  

“This is our first branded release and we wanted to have a bit of fun with it, tapping into what is a really emerging food style and an extension of the thriving street food scene that is embracing all cultures and all cuisines.  

“The wines are designed to stand up well to the robust, smoky flavours in the food.  We have already started pre-selling in to the trade and the response so far has been very positive.”

The range includes a Shiraz and a Viognier, retailing at around £7.99.

Inverarity Morton is hosting its annual tasting in Edinburgh today and wine buyer Toby Sigouin said 100 new wines have been added to the portfolio for 2015.

It now represents 140 producers from 16 countries, and 60 of the producers are in Scotland today to pour their wines.

Sigouin said: “The main job this year was continuing to refine the 2014 portfolio using both lists, but I came across some outstanding producers on my travels that I simply had to take on.  

“Woodstock from the McLaren Vale in Australia is a newcomer to the UK with an incredible history and connection to Scotland and we are now their sole agents in Scotland.”
