From this week, Waitrose will be offering its Wine Tasting at Home experience in a new virtual format for people to enjoy at home.

The retailer is now offering the option to sign up to either a Virtual Wine or Gin Tasting at Home where a Waitrose drinks expert will take them through an introduction to wine or how to make the perfect G&T via Zoom.

Customers can pick a session and ask friends and family to join online, or they can enjoy the experience alongside like-minded individuals.

Virtual Wine tasting at Home is £10 per household and within this the Waitrose Wine Specialist will lead an informal 45-60 minute introduction to wine tasting. They will cover the basics of wine making, discuss different wine styles and what foods to pair them with and share what to look out for when tasting.

Customers who have signed up will be asked to bring a bottle (or glass) of their choice and have some salt available for an interesting taste test.

The Virtual Gin Tasting at Home, which is also £10 per household, is a 45-60 minute session in which the Waitrose Specialist will share the history of gin, learn the right cocktail ratios, discover which drinks to shake or stir and make three classic gin-based recipes. The session will also help customers understand how to be more creative with what they have in your own drinks cabinet.

Customers will need a cocktail shaker (or empty jar), spirit measure (or shot glass/egg cup), and a range of ingredients to perfect the three classic gin cocktails*.

Anne Jones, Drinks Category Manager at Waitrose said: “The Waitrose Wine Tasting at Home experiences have been incredibly popular with our customers, so we are thrilled to be able to offer them online! They are a fun and relaxed way for you and your friends and family to get together virtually and learn a little bit more about wine and gin.

“Our fantastic team of specialists are there to give you some great tips, whether that’s what wine to pair with your favourite meal, or how to make the perfect Negroni, and all done from the comfort of your own home.”

This new service is part of a wider initiative from both Waitrose and John Lewis. Every Friday, there will be a series of virtual experiences, from wine and gin tasting to style talks. Partner experts will be bringing their knowledge and enthusiasm directly to customers via Zoom. There is also the option to join a trial session to get a flavour of the classes, tickets to introductory classes are free and places are limited.
