Exports of Prosecco Superiore DOCG to the UK doubled in 2019.

The Consorzio of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG has announced its “best-ever” export figures to the UK, which doubled during 2019 to 12.7 million bottles (a 99.9% increase year-on-year), with value up 83.1% to E62.8 million.

This makes the UK a new top export market for the premium Prosecco Superiore, with the UK taking the top spot from Germany, and the only market seeing double digit growth.

The Consorzio has invested in developing the UK market for growth since 2018 with a campaign led by Sarah Abbott MW and Madeleine Waters. The duo set out to educate the trade on the particularities of the denomination, the individualism of its producers, and how it differs to Prosecco DOC and other sparkling wines.

A series of masterclasses explored food pairings for sommeliers and there were also educational trade and press trips to the region.

Consorzio president Innocente Nardi, said: “We are experiencing an unprecedented moment in history, which is threatening the entire world and all of its production sectors. But in this difficult scenario, we are proud to have focused consolidating our Denomination, which can now face up to this crisis with the expertise that have led it last year, its 50th anniversary, achieving its best ever economic results.”
