Low/no specialist Tørstigbar is closing its Brighton location following a social media announcement in which owners said they are taking a break to focus on their health.

In November 2022, Tørstigbar’s Brighton shop/bar hybrid was opened. A second pop-up site was launched in Hoxton, London for two weeks in January 2024, with plans to make the venue a permanent fixture later in the year if the trial opening was successful.

However, owners Luke Cousins and Emmi Edwards have now announced their decision to close Tørstigbar’s Brighton location.

Explaining the closure in a statement on Instagram, Cousins and Edwards said: “For a while now, we’ve been running on empty. The cost of living crisis forced us both back into full time employment to keep the business and the dream alive. But in doing so, we have become totally and utterly burnt out.

“To enable us to really restore our mental and physical health, we’ve realised we need to take a break from our beloved business. For now, we are shutting our doors for as long as we need.”

They confirmed that the Brighton venue will be closing “immediately”, but did not state whether the closure would be permanent. The future of the London site is also unclear.

The pair also paid tribute to their team, saying: “We are so proud of our amazing team, all of whom we thank wholeheartedly for their passion, hard work and most of all, their understanding at this difficult time.”
