Tim Atkin MW has launched an inaugural report on Portuguese wine in collaboration with Wines of Portugal.

The new report comes as Portuguese wine continues to experience a surge in popularity in the UK, with exports increasing by more than £11 million (US$13 million) between 2024 and 2025, according to the American Association of Wine Economics.

It also coincides with the UK becoming Portugal’s fourth-largest export market by value, behind only France, the US and Brazil.

Written by wine journalist Beth Willard, the report scores 672 wines from 91 producers, with nearly half receiving 93 points or more.

According to Atkin, the report is expected to carry significant weight within the wine trade, following previous editions covering Rioja, South Africa, Argentina and Chile, which have helped shape the UK trade’s perception of each region.

Willard compiled the report over 15 days in March, travelling across seven Portuguese wine regions, tasting wines in cellars, walking vineyards and meeting producers firsthand.

On the process, Willard said: “Producing this first report on Portugal has been such a pleasure. No matter the colour or style, from north to south the wines are truly thrilling.

“Tasting with the growers and winemakers gave me invaluable insight into current trends and developments. You’ll find some well-known producers and classic wines here, but also many new projects to discover. I really hope you enjoy these wines as much as I did.”

Meanwhile, Atkin added: “As a long-term fan of Portuguese wines, I’m proud and excited to publish Beth Willard’s first ever Portugal Special Report on my site, based on weeks of visits and in-depth tastings in the country. I couldn’t think of a better person to write this overview and I can’t wait to taste the results of Beth’s hard work.”

Frederico Falcão, chairman of the ViniPortugal Board commented that the report marks a significant milestone for Portuguese wines. “This is recognition that Portuguese wines have earned their place among the world’s great wines,” he said.
