The Drinks Trust has reopened the WSET Bursary as part of its DEVELOP programme. It aims to create equal upskilling opportunities across the drinks trade.
First launched three years ago, the DEVELOP programme provides fully funded training and educational courses to those working in or aspiring to work in the drinks sector.
The partnership with the WSET offers several bursaries for candidates to gain a globally recognised qualification in the educators’ wine, spirits or sake courses, alongside the newly launched beer course.
The Drinks Trust said this bursary comes at a vital time, as the drinks and hospitality sector faces both recruitment and retention challenges, with recent figures showing over 80,000 vacancies in hospitality roles.
The organisation explained that access to professional development remains a significant barrier, especially for those facing financial hardship, career disruption, or those entering the industry from underrepresented backgrounds.
In the 2024–25 year, 173 students received a WSET bursary. Since its launch, the DEVELOP programme has supported over 2,500 people, including bartenders, sommeliers and retail and production professionals.
On renewing the partnership, Nicky Burston, CEO of The Drinks Trust, said: “Our mission is to create a thriving drinks industry. By reopening the WSET Bursary, we are helping to level the playing field and ensure that opportunities for learning, growth, and success are accessible to all, regardless of background or financial circumstance. In an industry that relies on talent, knowledge, and passion, education must be open to everyone.”
Details on how to apply for the WSET bursary can be found on The Drinks Trust website.
