The Drinks Trust has expanded its Develop training portfolio with the launch of the Level 1 Certified Cider Guide (ACA) online course as part of a push to expand access to specialist cider education. The course will be delivered in partnership with the American Cider Association (ACA) and supported by Heineken UK.
The on-demand qualification, which is fully funded for eligible applicants through The Drinks Trust’s Develop bursary programme, provides an introduction to cider production, tasting, styles and service, marking a key step in formalising cider education across the UK trade.
While the UK remains one of the world’s leading cider-producing regions, opportunities for structured training have been limited. The initiative aims to close that gap by supporting a wide range of learners, from bartenders and retail staff to brand ambassadors, distributors and producers.
“The qualification represents an important milestone in formalising cider education in the UK,” said Nicky Burston, chief executive of The Drinks Trust.
“By investing in knowledge and professional development, we’re not only supporting individuals, we’re also reinforcing the growth and credibility of the cider category across the industry.”
Entirely digital and self-paced, the course includes a downloadable study guide, on-demand video content and the official ACA certification exam, allowing participants to complete training flexibly alongside work commitments.
Jennie Dorsey, director of education at the American Cider Association, added: “We’re thrilled to team up with The Drinks Trust to make cider education more accessible. The Certified Cider Guide course opens doors for professionals and enthusiasts to level up their knowledge, celebrate cider’s diversity, and keep the category growing with talented individuals.”
Heineken UK’s support reflects its wider commitment to workforce development and category engagement.
“As the world’s largest cider maker, we know how vital it is that the next generation of hospitality professionals have the knowledge to be passionate about all aspects of cider production,” said Guy Mason, head of alcohol partnerships at Heineken UK.
Through Develop, The Drinks Trust continues to remove financial barriers to professional growth, helping to create a more skilled, resilient and inclusive drinks industry.
