La Companie de La Burgondie is celebrating its first major UK off-trade listing with the launch of a wine made from an ancient Burgundian variety into Tesco stores.

La Burgondie Bourgogne Aligoté 2017 (rsp: £9) is made from the grape variety Aligoté, which has been criticised in the past for being a difficult grape to ripen and is often overshadowed by its more famous Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Burgundian cousins.

However, the co-operative group said Aligoté has made “vast inroads” in recent years in terms of quality and winemakers, recognising its true potential, have taken a more serious approach to production.

Alain Pierre, winemaker for La Compagnie de Burgondie, said: “The overall quality of Aligoté production has been much improved in recent years through winemaking advances and better ripening conditions. As a result, it is becoming increasingly discovered and enjoyed by wine drinkers who appreciate its refreshing, fruity, zingy qualities.”

La Burgondie, distributed by drinks company Bibendum PLB, is aimed at the UK off-trade and represents key appellations and crus of La Grande Bourgogne, via a range comprising more than 30 still and sparkling wines from throughout Burgundy and Beaujolais.

Bruno Boucher, export off-trade manager, added: “Our mission is to deliver an affordable and quality-driven Burgundy brand that is easy to navigate for consumers and La Burgondie Aligoté is a fantastic first example to launch into the UK.”
