Telmont has become the first Champagne house to achieve Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) status.

Part-owned by Leonardo DiCaprio, the house has achieved a bronze level in the certification, which was created in 2017 by the Regenerative Organic Alliance.

To attain the certification, Telmont said it completely halted its use of herbicides, synthetic pesticides, synthetic fungicides and synthetic fertilizers.

It also committed to biodiversity, soil regeneration and fair working conditions for agricultural workers – a philosophy the house said it was already guided by.

To achieve the bronze level, Telmont demonstrated practices including planting trees, collecting rainwater, using cover crops and scientifically measuring soil health.

The house said it is also continuing its ‘In the Name of Mother Nature’ programme, which was launched in 2021.

The project aims to convert 100% of Telmont’s estate and partner vineyards to organic and regenerative agriculture by 2031, and to reach net zero by 2050.

DiCaprio said: “Becoming the first Champagne house to earn Regenerative Organic Certification is a major achievement for Telmont and for Champagne as a whole.”

Ludovic du Plessis, president of Maison Telmont, added: “This certification crowns several years of dedicated effort. By obtaining the certification ROC, we are stating loud and clear our conviction: agriculture must be both organic and regenerative. One cannot exist without the other!”
