Spitfire Gold, launched into the on-trade in September, is to be made available to the national retail trade.

Spitfire Gold is produced by the Kent-based brewery, Shepherd Neame.

It has an abv of 4.3% – slightly above the 4.1% abv of the ale on draught – and is now available in the off-trade in 500ml bottles.

Spitfire Gold is lighter than Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale and Shepherd Neame believes it has potential crossover appeal for lager fans.

It is created using traditional brewing methods and locally sourced ingredients.

Spitfire was first brewed 25 years ago to mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Sales of Spitfire has raised more than £500,000 for Royal Air Force activities during the past two decades.

Spitfire Gold is a permanent addition to the range. Its creation marks the 75th anniversary of the air battles above the fields of Kent that protected Britain from invasion.

Shepherd Neame was founded in Faversham in 1698 and is the oldest operational brewery in the UK.
