Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle put the sparkle in bubbly sales as they increased 36.6% year-on-year for the week of the wedding.

IRI data for the week to May 19 showed that sparkling wine and cakes were the star performers as shoppers spent £1.7 billion in the grocery channel.

Sparkling wine sales also grew by 12.5% on the previous week, reaching £20.7 million.

Tim Dummer, commercial and strategy director at IRI, said: “It’s no surprise that UK consumers splashed out on sparkling wine and cakes during arguably the biggest party of the year.

“The combination of a special celebration, beautiful weather and an increase in visitor numbers to the UK saw supermarkets’ tills ringing.”
