Online retailer Slurp has launched a French site in what it is calling “an audacious bid to beat the French on their own patch”.

Slurp said French e-commerce is lagging behind the UK – and hopes its new site,, will become France’s top online drinks retailer within three years.

The site has launched with 700 products but is set to grow to more than 2,000 in three months.

Chief executive Jeremy Howard said: “France is Europe’s largest wine market by value but is surprisingly poorly served online. A number of globally famous New World brands are totally absent from the French market. We want to change this.  

“Most French sites suffer from a lack of investment and poor functionality. Substandard service, high delivery charges and the negative publicity associated with some high-profile failures have combined to retard development of this market. But we believe that our six years of e-commerce experience in the UK gives us an excellent platform from which to launch a significant market share grab in France.“ 

The site is Slurp’s first move into Europe and is targeting younger, affluent consumers with mainly New World wines, which the retailer says can be suprisingly difficult to get hold of in France.

The site will include many of the features that have been popular in the UK, including many products available in singles, Cork Points, an “online sommelier” and a section where fine wines can be traded online.
