Self-cooling can designer deltaH Innovations has partnered with Brains Brewery to launch a “commercialised, shelf-ready” self-cooling can.
The partnership will bring Bayside Welsh Lager to market in a fully recyclable Cool>Can. According to deltaH, the move demonstrates the commercial viability of the technology.
The can uses a push-button-activated chemical reaction to chill beverages, producing a temperature drop of around 10–15°C, depending on the starting temperature. The reaction uses water and a “patented salt-based coolant”.
The company said retail pricing is expected to be “in a similar space to other value-added or speciality can formats, such as nitro/widget cans”.
The launch follows two years of development, and deltaH Innovations founder and CEO James Vyse said the Brains partnership represented a significant step forward.
“Up until now, we’ve been sending and discussing prototypes, but what we’ll actually be presenting is the first Cool>Can in a commercial partnership, with the brand actually on the can,” said Vyse. “It’s a huge leap from technical development and towards mainstream market adoption.”
The can will make its debut during London Packaging Week at Excel London on 16 and 17 September.
