The Official Rioja Wine Educator course has announced its latest round of graduations, with five graduates from the UK.
Led by the Rioja Wine Academy, a training platform set up by the region’s Control Board, the education programme saw 39 global graduates in 2023, meaning there are now 182 official Rioja educators worldwide.
The UK now has five newly certified Rioja educators: Matthew Wicksteed (from Streatham Wine House), Joseph Hallam (WSET), Christopher Martin (WSET), David Harker (Newcastle Wine School) and Anna Ferrier (Aberdeen Wine School).
The Official Rioja Wine Educator course involves travelling to the Spanish region to visit around 60 wineries. Those who gain the qualification are able to lead certified courses in their respective countries.
Christopher Martin, director of educator training programmes at WSET and newly certified Rioja educator, said: “The Rioja Wine Academy trip was a remarkable journey, revealing the region’s diversity of styles and producers: from the classic names to new and exciting producers.
“This unique experience gave me a much richer and more complete picture of what Rioja has to offer.”
