Plans have been submitted for a £25 million malt whisky distillery at Inveraray Castle, the seat of the Duke of Argyll.

The application has been made to Argyll & Bute Council by Stock Spirits, owner of the Clan Campbell whisky brand. The Duke of Argyll is also the Campbell clan chief.

The whisky plant will be named Inveraray Distillery and create 20 jobs.

Stock aims to make a single malt at the distillery and may use the spirit produced there in the Clan Campbell brand.

Subject to planning permission, construction could start in early 2025, with the first spirit produced in 2027.

Torquhil Campbell, the 13th Duke of Argyll, said: “To see Scotch whisky being distilled in the grounds will be significant positive development – for the local community, for the castle and for Clan Campbell.”

Stock Spirits’ chief executive Jean-Christophe Coutures, added: “This investment is an important step for the group towards having its own single malt whisky production, which will strengthen the Clan Campbell brand and Stock Spirits’ presence in this growing category.”
