Pint sized wine bottles are due to roll out across the on- and off-trade, the Department for Business and Trade has announced.

The new 56.8cl bottles are set to launch this year and they can be sold alongside 20cl and 50cl bottles. The government said the aim is to boost production and unify regulations across still and sparkling wine, while also offering more choice for consumers.

While most alcoholic drinks can be sold only in a range of fixed quantities in accordance with the Weights and Measures (Intoxicating Liquor) Order 1988, the UK’s departure from the EU has led to the revision of these quantities under the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act 2023.

Nicola Bates, CEO of WineGB said: “We welcome the chance to be able to harmonise still and sparkling bottle sizes and we are happy to raise a glass to the greater choice that allows UK producers for domestic sales.”
