Harlem Renaissance Wit is leaving New York for the first time and has joined Pierhead Drinks’ beer portfolio.

Pierhead, which represents a host of beers and ciders from around the world, will be the UK importer and distributor of the beer.

The beer hails from the Harlem Brewing Company, which was founded in 2000. The company was created by Celeste Beatty, who had been experimenting with her home brewing kit in her small Harlem apartment since 1990 before setting up her company. At the time she took her recipe for her first beer, Sugar Hill Golden Ale, to Paul McErlean, the head brewer at Olde Saratoga Brewing in Upstate New York. She has contract brewed her beers in this way since that date, although her goal is to eventually open her own full-scale brewery and tasting room in Harlem.

More recently, in 2014, Beatty created Renaissance Wit, a Belgian style wheat ale brewed with spices. The beer is lightly hoped with rich coriander, cumin, grains of paradise and orange peel for a mellow finish. The brewer recommends pairing the beer with a variety of cuisines including seafood and cheeses such as Brie and Camembert.

In 2015 the company created Sugar Hill Strawberry Hard Cider.

Harlem Brewing Company has achieved a strong following in the New York craft beer community, supported by international media coverage.
