New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW) has appointed Anishka Jelicich as its next chief executive officer, with the Paris-based Pernod Ricard executive set to take up the role at the end of July 2026.
Jelicich will step down from her current position as global director responsible for marketing and sales at Pernod Ricard to return to New Zealand, where she will be based at NZW’s Auckland headquarters.
The appointment comes at what the organisation describes as a “critical moment” for the New Zealand wine sector. While the category continues to benefit from strong export demand and a premium global reputation, producers are navigating a more complex trading environment marked by geopolitical uncertainty, cost pressures and shifting consumer dynamics.
Her appointment follows the retirement of long-standing CEO Philip Gregan, who will step down at the end of June after 43 years with the organisation. NZW credited Gregan with helping to shape the modern New Zealand wine industry and establishing the body as one of the most influential global wine organisations.
Jelicich brings more than 20 years’ experience across New Zealand, the UK and Europe, with a career spanning industry, government and international markets.
Chair Fabian Yukich said the board had prioritised global perspective and stakeholder management in its search.
“Anishka was a stand-out candidate for us with her deep understanding of the New Zealand wine industry combined with extensive global knowledge and experience. She offers strong credentials in navigating complex international environments, a deep understanding of policy and trade, and a proven ability to build alignment across diverse stakeholders,” he said.
For the UK market, the move is likely to signal a continued focus on premium positioning and sustainability credentials as the two pillars that have underpinned New Zealand wine’s success in the multiples. With the category maintaining strong off-trade penetration, particularly in Sauvignon Blanc, leadership continuity and strategic direction will be closely watched by buyers.
Jelicich said she was “honoured” to take on the role and highlighted both the opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
She said: “The New Zealand wine industry is globally respected and it plays an important role in our nation’s economy and communities. I am looking forward to serving and supporting the interests of our members and working closely with the Board and the NZW team to support the industry through its current challenges, opportunities and positioning it strongly for the future.”
NZW represents more than 600 grape growers and 700 wineries, with New Zealand wine exported to over 100 countries. The category accounts for just over 1% of global wine production but continues to punch above its weight in value terms, with exports reaching NZ$2.10bn in 2025.
