A white rum from Bali is heading over to UK shores, with a mission to remind consumers of Indonesia’s part in rum’s long history.

Nusa Caña Rum was created by brand experts Marc Rodrigues, Joe Milner, Andy Gaunt and award-winning bartender Sam Jeveons, with the aim of “bringing back one of rum’s forgotten stories”.

Rodrigues has worked for Beam Brands, Constellation Brands and Diageo in Australia and Asia, while British born Jeveons has built up a strong reputation as a leading expert of the Asian bar and cocktail industry. He has had stints working for the Match Bar Group, which includes Trailer Happiness in London, before moving to Asia in 2006.

Rodrigues said: “Indonesia’s part in the story of cane spirits, and therefore rum, is both compelling and valid. We have forgotten that sugar cane originates in SE Asia and was taken from here to the Caribbean and elsewhere. We have forgotten that early explorers visiting what is now Indonesia discovered the locals drinking a distilled sugar cane spirit as far back as the 15th Century, before the word rum was even coined. To bring it back in a serious way, I assembled friends and industry experts from Australia, Asia and the UK to launch Nusa Caña, a tropical island rum with the vision to take the story of Indonesian rum and the Bali lifestyle we love to the rest of the world.”

Nusa Caña is made using ancient Indonesian methods: molasses from local sugar cane and forest filtered water are fermented with yeast grown on Javanese red rise, then distilled twice in steel ‘Chinese’ pot stills before finally being aged in teak casks to five the rum and overall drier finish and blended to create a distinctive but mixable taste.

Jeveons said: “Nusa Caña is putting Indonesia firmly back on the rum map. Blended for modern tastes it is a vibrant and fruity white rum full of character. It is great on the rocks, in shots and a fantastic addition to citrus or tropical-led cocktails – it is one for mixing drinks not to keep sitting on the back bar.”
