Japanese whisky producer Nikka has released two single malts finished in apple brandy barrels.

The two whiskies – one each from its Miyagikyo  and Yoichi distilleries – have been produced to mark the 100 years since founder Masataka Takesturu married Jessie Roberta Cowan – aka Rita – in Glasgow.

Apples play a significant part in the early history of Nikka as Takesturu made money from juice and jam from Hokkaido apples while waiting for his first whisky to mature.

The new limited edition whiskies have both spent six months in apple brandy casks and have been bottled at 47% abv.

They are available in the UK through Nikka distributor Speciality Brands, with an rrp of £195 each.
