Bruichladdich mellows out

Bruichladdich has released the second edition bottling of its 18 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky.

Designed to replace the original 18 Year Old bottling, which sold out soon after its release, the second edition

has been matured in American oak,

and has

been refined in sweet wine casks from the Pyrenean appellation of Jurançon.

"This small, little-known French appellation, hidden away in the mountains, produces a decadently sweet wine from the obscure Petit Manseng grape, late-harvested in November," said managing director Mark Reynier.

" We wanted a

contrast with this new version,

while retaining the toasted French oak nose, voluptuously mellow body and hint of tropical fruit," he added.

The second edition is

said to have "rich botrytis honey notes, hints of butterscotch, mango and pineapple". It will retail for £50 a bottle, and will be available through UK distributor Malcolm Cowen .

The Balvenie adds a touch of spice

First Drinks Brands has added The Balvenie Rum Cask 17 Year Old to its portfolio. The limited -edition single malt has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks before undergoing a second maturation period in rum casks from Jamaica, giving it "a further layer of richness, warmth and spice", according to malt master David Stewart. "This is only the second time we have experimented with maturing The Balvenie in a rum cask. This sweet and intense 17 Year Old is an exceptionally pleasurable result," Stewart added. Retailing at £65 per bottle, with 43% abv, it will be available in the UK and limited markets worldwide from September.
