New Wave trophies awarded

Spanish Ambassador Carles María Casajuana and Tim Atkin MW presented 20 trophies to the category winners from this year's New Wave Spanish Wine Awards at the Spanish Embassy.

The winners were presented with engraved decanters by glassware specialist Riedel .

The event was attended by a number of winemakers who had taken a break from the Spanish vintage - Adriana Ochoa came from Navarra to collect the trophy for Ochoa Graciano/Garnacha 2005 while Joan Sangenís and Joan Josep Tetas made the trip from Priorat to receive the trophy for Mas d'en Compte 2006 (white) and Bodegas Pinord+7 2005 respectively.

A delighted Ben Henshaw of Indigo Wines picked up three trophies and hopes that the accolades will help to promote the wines to retailers this year. He said: "The qualities of the judges, the organisation behind it and the promotion of the event have all been first class. It creates a bit of healthy competition between serious Spanish importers and

I look forward

to entering plenty of

wines again next year."

Waitrose buyer Nick Room collected the trophy for Best Own Label Sherry. He added: "The competition inspires buyers in terms of broadening outlook as to what's available from modern Spain, as well as rewarding the excellence that encourages producers to make even better wines for future consumption."
