WSTA predicts a post-Budget fallout
The Wine & Spirit Trade Association has predicted almost 30,000 jobs would be at risk if the Chancellor uses the Budget to add an expected 5% duty increase on most types of alcohol.
There are fears the rise could be even higher for high-strength products such as spirits.
WSTA? chief executive Jeremy Beadles said: “The scale of job losses in the past year alone should serve as a warning.
“The last thing the industry needs is another set of duty increases which discourage investment and put jobs at risk.
“The sector needs time to recover. It ought to be part of the UK’s economic recovery, not punished again, particularly when? evidence shows increased taxes have not delivered the revenue forecast by the Treasury.”
