Select Convenience hits 100

Bargain Booze has celebrated opening its 100th Select Convenience store – by establishing another five shops nationally.

The 100th Bargain Booze Select Convenience began trading in South Ockendon, Essex, three-and-a-half years after the first outlet was launched.

Since then another five shops have opened, bringing the convenience chain to 105 in an estate of nearly 640.

Over the past two years Bargain Booze has moved down the M5 corridor into the south west, and has roughly doubled the number in the south, to some 150.

It is a signal that the chain has moved beyond its north west heartland to become a national player, after attempts to open up the south stalled a few years ago.

“Select Convenience is a nice format to go into any larger store,” joint managing director Matthew Hughes told OLN. “Anything from 800-3,000 sq ft where you can get a full convenience offering powered by our well-recognised alcohol offering is absolutely perfect for us.”?Commercial director Mark Crabtree added: “Reaching 100 convenience stores so swiftly is a fantastic milestone for the company and demonstrates customers around the country are enthusiastic about our strategy to develop a full convenience offer driven by off-licences.

“This is reinforced even further by the Select Convenience format demonstrating on numerous occasions how it can compete effectively with the major multiples as they continue to march into the convenience marketplace. Our 100th store is a prime example of this.”?Hughes said he was confident about Christmas trading and the year to come.

“We are going to continue to grow, to continue to work with all our formats because they are all proving to be very successful, and we are going to continue handling our own company, doing our own thing and doing it well,” he said.
