UKHospitality unveils guidelines to help sector reopen safely

UKHospitality has unveiled secure guidelines for the sector, which it is proposing to Government to help the industry reopen.

The trade body is submitting a 75-page document which gives suggestions about how to implement social distancing measures to help pubs and restaurants operate safely. Hospitality businesses have been told they could open as early as July 4 if they can do so safely.

The measures outlined in the document include removing condiments from tables, ending the hotel buffet, and digitising tips. It also says people visiting pubs and restaurants should expect reduced menus.

UKHospitality is urging the government to endorse the guidelines to help businesses to prepare for reopening from July 4, as part of its #FAIR4Hospitality campaign, which it is launching today.

Meanwhile, the Government is reported to be in discussions with the hospitality industry to see if pubs with beer gardens can open, perhaps earlier than other businesses.

The hospitality sector has been amongst the worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with around a third of businesses predicting they will never reopen some sites.

It also wants the sector to be granted a rent-free holiday until the end of the year and it said sales of VAT should be cut for hospitality businesses.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive, said: “We will be ready to restart in England on July 4, and other parts of the country when allowed, but it is vital that reopening is done in the right way, at the right time and with the right support – so that our industry can help bring employees, customers and communities back together safely over the coming months.

“The summer is a crucial time for the sector. The Great British public deserve safe accommodation, eating and drinking out experiences, holidays and leisure time; the financial cost is a justified investment in our nation’s wellbeing and the future of the economy.”
