The Character of Islay Whisky Company adds two aged Islay Single Malts
The Character of Islay Whisky Company has added two more aged Islay Single Malts to its range.
The independent bottler from Atom Brands has added Glace Ile and The Legend of Fiona Macleod, both – like all releases in the collection – are sourced from undisclosed distilleries on Islay.
The newcomers will join the company’s inaugural 10-year old single malt, Aerolite Lyndsay, which it launched in Autumn last year.
The Character of Islay Whisky Company brand plays with the romanticism and myths associated with Islay whisky production. Each ‘character’ in the range is given a playful name that both nods to the history and quirks of the island as well as having fun with the poetic licence whisky marketing often assumes.
The name ‘Grace Ile’ is a playful dedication to the elusive and mischievous nature of the grey seals that famously populate the waters of Islay. The 25 year-old single malt (rsp: 299.95) is matured exclusively in American oak. It is described as being bold, complex and with an “exceptionally long finish, mixing smoke, sea and sweetness”.
The Legend of Fiona Macleod (rsp: 399.95) refers to the pen name of William Sharp, an esteemed chronicler of traditional Hebridean tales during the 19th century.
Dr Sam Simmons, head of whisky at Atom Brands, said: “Aged Islay whisky is increasingly hard to come by these days, and as with all precious and rare things, it’s a real treat to get in your glass. That’s why our two latest releases from The Character of Islay Whisky Company, which are continuous expressions and not just limited to batches, are a very special proposition indeed.
“Coming from a time when Islay whisky inventory was thin on the ground, particularly in the case of the 33-year-old Fiona Macleod, which was distilled in the 80’s, these whiskies capture a bit of the magic of Islay. The mystery distilleries will keep the connoisseurs guessing, but what’s really important is the story in the glass. Throw the cork away...and then slowly creep over and replace it - you will want to savour these!’
Both expressions are available to purchase via MasterofMalt.com and via Maverick Drinks in the UK.
