Jeroboams reports positive start to 2020
Jeroboams, the London-based wine retailer, has reported a good start to the year bolstered by a strong Burgundy En Primeur campaign, and leading on from positive results for the 2019 festive season.
Managing director, Hugh Sturges, told DRN: “December, always such an important month for our retail arm, turned out to be better than hoped. We were really happy that much of our activity in the community, from having stalls at local fairs, to singing carols and, of course offering tastings in store throughout December, has resulted in a good trading month for us.
“Our London stores as a whole were up 7.5% on December 2018 and individually all bar one of our wine shops showed improved figures with the best result being in one of our new sites (in Kensington High St) being 40% up for the month. It takes a little while to grow a local following but it is good to see that hard work and a welcoming smile works in the long run.”
Jeroboams’ High Street Kensington opened in May 2019. The store – which is the eighth in the retailer’s portfolio - remained under the Prohibition Wines banner until January 2019, when it officially became a Jeroboams store.
The positive Christmas trading results for Jeroboams were mirrored by other independent wine retailers such as the three-strong Oxford Wine Company, which revealed December had been a record month for the company.
Majestic also announced 4.3% like-for-like growth for the final quarter of 2019 with sales up for English wine, cremant sparkling wines and spiced rums in particular. The retailer said December 23 was the "largest-ever trading day" in its 40-year history, up 2.3% on the largest trading day of 2018.
The results reflect sharply against overall BWS sales for the 12 weeks to January 4, with the category recording a 0.2% drop, according to Nielsen data. For the final four weeks of the Christmas period BWS sales declined 0.1% although the low and no-alcohol beer and cider category enjoyed impressive 24% growth. Soft drinks was also one of the best-performing categories in grocery.
