Date set for start of minimum pricing in Wales

The National Assembly for Wales has approved the introduction of minimum unit pricing for alcohol from next spring.

The move will mean all alcohol will have to be sold at a minimum of 50p per unit of alcohol from March 2, 2020.

It brings Wales into line with Scotland which introduced minimum pricing in April 2108.

The Welsh government says its move will save the NHS in Wales £90 million over the next two decades and result in 66 fewer deaths a year.

A national communications campaign will launch before the new law comes in to make the public, retailers and others affected by the change aware.
