Steven Soderbergh brings Singani 63 to the UK
Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has brought his favourite Bolivian liqueur, Singani 63, to the UK for the first time.
Singani, the national spirit of Bolivia, is made from the Muscat of Alexandria grape, which dates back 500 years. It has been given a DO (Designation of Origin) and GI (Geographical Indication), which confirms that the grapes are grown at a minimum altitude of 5,250 feel and only within the confines of the historic home of Singani in the Andes.
The drink has never been sold outside of Bolivia until Soderbergh fell in love with it while shooting the moving Che a decade ago, after which he embarked on the challenge of importing the drink to the US.
The 80 proof (40% abv) Singani 63 is recommended as an ingredient in classic cocktails, replacing the main spirit with the Bolivian variant. Examples include: the White Negroni, made with Singani 63, Lillet blanc, yellow chartreuse, Combier and a grapefruit twist; and the Bolivian 63, made with Singani 63, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, Champagne and a lemon twist.
Soderbergh said there are many reasons why he wanted to bring the drink to the US and now the UK, one of which is “because a billion Bolivians can’t be wrong”.
He added: “This is a truly exceptional product. In fact I have built my career on being able to distinguish the exceptional from the ordinary, and I know Singani 63 is an exceptional product.”
