Charity bike ride in honour of Dan Townsend

Andrew Shaw and Philip Tuck MW will lead a peloton of riders for a charity cycle in memory of the late Treasury Wines Estates managing director Dan Townsend.

Townsend was chairman of drinks trade charity The Benevolent during a long and successful career in the industry and he raised vital funds during his tenure.

Shaw, Conviviality’s wine buying director, and Tuck, wine director at Hatch Mansfield, are aiming to raise £10,000 for The Benevolent in honour of Townsend.

All funds will go to current and former members of the drinks trade that have fallen on hard times and need support.

The 64-mile bike ride will begin at Ridgeview Wine Estate in the South Downs and end in London, taking in Denbies in Surrey and the TWE head office in Twickenham.

Joining Shaw and Tuck are Andrew Reed, managing director of William Reed Business Media, and Andrew Hawes, managing director of Mentzendorff, both of whom are trustees of The Benevolent.

The peloton is warmly inviting fellow bike riders of the trade to join them and raise collectively £10,000 for the charity that Townsend so actively and passionately supported in life.

Shaw said: “It’s a great honour to be supporting The Benevolent in aid of Dan, a man the drinks industry had great admiration and respect for. Our intention is to have as wider audience as possible involved, both cyclists and supporters to help commemorate a great man.

“We are indebted to Ridgeview, Denbies and especially to Treasury Wine Estates for their kind and generous support of the event and look forward to a memorable day of camaraderie, sport and friendship.”

David Cox, The Benevolent’s chief executive, added: “This is such an appropriate way to remember Dan and we are indebted to the organising team and to members of TWE for making it happen. Dan loved The Benevolent and so I urge everyone to support the riders. “
