PLB takes on South African producer Bosman

PLB has moved quickly to fill a gap in its portfolio with South African producer Bosman Family Vineyards replacing Vergelegen, which transfers to Fells on January 2.

Eighth-generation family estate Bosman produces a range of Fairtrade wines including Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from 250ha of vineyards spread across Wellington, Hermon and the Walker Bay region.

It is also home to one of the largest vine-propagating nurseries in the country, where the team can experiment with unusual grape varieties.

All 260 farm workers own shares in the business and the entire process is Fairtrade.

Lucy Warner, PLB’s UK business development manager, said: “I am excited that Bosman will be working with PLB in the UK, in particular to help the business develop in the independent, specialist, convenience and on-trade sectors of the market as this is an area with great potential for hand-crafted wines from a family business with wonderful stories.”

PLB has been busy snapping up new estates to join its expanding portfolio recently, adding Argentine producer Finca Las Moras along with three New Zealand wineries – Babich, Micha’s Vineyards and Matahiwi.

Sales director John Osborne said: “Our business model is constantly evolving and one of the key changes over the last few years has been the repositioning of PLB as a fine wine merchant – and with that some exciting new additions to our portfolio for this sector.  With premium wine credentials, a totally driven approach and a long term family business background like PLB, Bosman is the perfect fit and we look forward to developing its business in the UK.”

The wines will be available for tasting at PLB’s regional road shows taking place in 2014:  Edinburgh (March 4); Manchester (March 5); and London (March 6).
