Here's to the future

Stratford's Wine Agencies will be back with some well-established names and some

new releases to

the UK market, with the Pirie South and Estate ranges from Tasmania's Tamar Valley falling into the latter category.

A recent addition to Stratford's portfolio, Pirie Tasmania is the creation of winemaker

Dr Andrew Pirie,

a driving force behind Tasmania's wine industry. His Pirie South Estelle - a blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, and the whole of the Pirie Estate range will be on show, as will a new range of blends and varietal wines from

south eastern Australia called Rosedale Ridge.

Stratford's will also be re launching its Tortoiseshell Bay range in London with

single varietal wines

joining the current blends and it will be introducing two new labels to its K1 range, a Cabernet/Tempranillo 2004 and

Semillon/Viognier 2006. Stand F22

Negociants UK will be offering pre-release tastings of Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz 2004 and Jim Barry The Armagh 2004 as well as The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 and the First XI Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 on May 22.

On Wednesday

May 23 there will be the chance for visitors to taste composite parts of the Nautilus Pinot Noir and concurrent ­vintages of Vasse Felix Heytesbury ­Cabernet Sauvignon. Stand G30

Hatch Mansfield will be showing a

new 2006 rosé from the Grant Burge Benchmark range.

Redesigns for three of Grant Burge's seven ranges of Barossa wines will also be unveiled

at the show.

Labels for the Benchmark, Barossa Vine and Vineyard ranges have

been designed to

reflect the individual nature of the wines. Stand S60

A new multi-regional brand will be

unveiled in the UK

by Wingara Wine Group at the Bibendum stand.

Crackerjack features bold packaging and will be introduced to the UK market at the price point of £7.99.

Made from wine produced in Murray, Darling and Coonawarra, the range consists of four wines - Bush Block Chardonnay, Stockman's Trail Cabernet Sauvignon, Big River Shiraz/Viognier and Murray Junction Petit Verdot. The group will also

reveal new-look packaging for its Deakin Estate range,

to appeal to younger, female consumers. Stand D30

Crush Wines ha s two new Australian producers in

its portfolio. The family-owned Salena Estate is based in

South Australia and is at the forefront

of developing sales of low-alcohol and organic wines. ­

Hungerford Hill produces wine from all over Australia, paying particular attention to smaller parcels from some of the country's best regions.

The company's winemakers, Phillip John and Mark Cashmore, have developed three ranges specifically for the UK market - Fishcage, Hungerford Hill and Heavy Metal - which they will bring to the show. Stand R42

A range of 9.5 per cent abv wines will be launched by McGuigan Simeon Wines . The new "lower-than-average-alcohol" range includes classic Australian varieties such as Chardonnay and Shiraz.

The recently launched McGuigan Collection, which includes a Barossa Valley

Shiraz/Viognier and a Victoria Pinot Grigio will also be available to try, as will the multiple-targeted range McGuigan Gold.

Two new additions to Lisa McGuigan's Tempus Two Copper range - the 2005 Mélange à Trois and 2006 Copper Moscato - will be on the same stand. Stand F8

Family-owned and managed premium Australian


De Bortoli has a new selection of wines which reflect its Italian heritage.

Launching with the 2007 vintage, they include Trebbiano/Pinot Grigio, Shiraz/Dolcetto and Pink Moscato.

A selection of D e Bortoli Pinot Noirs, produced under the guidance of chief winemaker Steve Webber, will also be available to taste. Stand E20

Bottle Green will be showing Andrew Peace's FuturPak, an environmentally-friendly 1-litre alternative to glass bottles. Peace is the first Australian producer to sell Chardonnay and Shiraz wines in FuturPak in the UK.

Bottle Green also has a new range of tri-varietal wines called Great Northern Road,

sourced from vineyards around Victoria's Great Northern Road and blended by winemaker Nicole Esdaile. Stand D68

Evans & Tate will be launching

its Single Vineyard Collection. The range includes 2005 Stellar Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay and 2005 Wildberry Springs Estate Chardonnay


Both are produced in vineyards included in the Chardonnay Project, a research initiative developed to identify specific plant, soil, growing and production variables that could be combined to produce Australia's best Chardonnay from Margaret River.

It will also be unveiling the

Cumulus Wines has

a new

rosé called Pink Billy and a new Pinot Grigio from the Climbing range. Pink Billy uses a blend of 85 per cent Merlot and 15 per cent Shiraz from Philip Shaw's high-altitude Koomooloo vineyard in Orange, New South Wales. Stand F32

HwCg launches

S&P, which includes a Semillon/Chardonnay and a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon,

produced at the Neqtar winery in Mildura, Victoria, alongside

more established brands, Roberts Estate and Calder Grove. Stand S30

New brand

Runamok will be available for tasting at the Vinoceros stand. The independent targeted range is made up of a 2006 Chardonnay, 2006 Merlot, 2005 Shiraz and a 2005 blend called Fireship Red. The importers and distributors will also have wines from Red Hill Estate, a range

acquired earlier this year, to taste.

Orbital Wines has some new blends within its Camden Park range

- a Shiraz/Petit Verdot and a Chardonnay/Verdelho

will be unveiled alongside

a new

Pinot Noir. Orbital will also be giving those with a strong stomach the chance to try their luck on the Camden Park Bucking Bull, which will be placed at the West entrance. It costs £3 a go with all proceeds going to The Benevolent. Stand Q8

Foster's EMEA will be giving visitors to

its stand

a chance to taste the complete 2007 Penfolds Luxury and Icon portfolio, including 2002 Grange and the latest vintages of Bin 707. Wine maker Peter Gago


present a series of six seminars on the portfolio and Rosemount winemaker Charles Whish will also be present. There will be offerings from Foster's other major Australian brands, Lindemans and Wolf Blass. Stand D40

Cellar Door is flying over a selection of winemakers from

its wineries, including Ed Carr, group sparkling winemaker at Hardy Wine Company, Stuart Bourne, senior winemaker at Barossa and Leasingham winemaker Simon Osicka.

HBJ is launching new packaging and a new range of dual varietal wines for Yarra Valley brand Sticks. New vintages and a new Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro blend from old vine Barossa Valley winery Torbreck Vintners will also be on taste.

Bruce Tyrrell (below), owner of Tyrrell's Wines, will attend the show for the first time in more than a decade to

show six of his wines - two Semillons, a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir and a brace of Shiraz wines. He will also be hosting a

number of seminars and tastings at the Wine ­Australia stand. Stand F32

Winemaker Jim Chatto, of Chatto Wines, will be present at the show to launch his Circus Series wines.

The range of five

is based on a circus theme

and the wines sport names such as Highwire Verdelho and Strong Man Shiraz. Stand H18

Peter Lehmann

chief winemaker Andrew Wigan will bring over 20 wines, including

new ­"district wines", made only when grapes from a certain region or vineyard show such regional character that they are not blended with other wines .

- the joint venture between Brian Croser, Jean-Michel Cazes and Arnould d'Hautefeuille

- will be offering visitors the chance to try the latest wine from the


Vineyard in ­Wrattonbully, South Australia.

Grapes for the Tapanappa Whalebone Vineyard 2004 Merlot are grown on the site where a 35 million-year-old whale skeleton was found. Stand G72

More than a hint of modernity

Wine Australia has joined forces with TastingBuddy to allow technologically-minded visitors to record tasting notes electronically.

Visitors can either bring their own Black Berry or borrow a PDA from TastingBuddy at stand F32 .

There is also the opportunity to download details of all 57 Australian producers exhibiting at the show before

it actually begins.

Melissa Worthington, marketing and communications manager at Wine Australia, sa ys: "The Australian wine industry likes to differentiate itself through innovation - whether through new techniques, varieties and viticulture, or with marketing, packaging and technology.

"Visitors will have the opportunity to preview what's in store at the LIWSF, and TastingBuddy will assist in effectively maximising time and planning at the show."

The future (2025 to be exact) is wh at the Australian wine industry will be looking towards at the LIWSF this year. 

Wine Australia: Direction to 2025 is a new strategy for the

global development of Australian wine which will be unveiled by chairman of the Direction's 15-member taskforce Kevin McLintock and Paul Henry of the Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation. The

event will take place in Waterfront Rooms seven and eight on May 22 at 10.15am.

Wine Australia is also keen to show how

its wines can appeal to every market and has split the 500 or so wines on show into four sub-brands, or personalities,


its stand (F32) a must-stop for anyone who is short on time

but still wants to find out about the diversity of the country and its wines.

The four categories are Brand Champions, which looks at Australia's most recognised labels such as Jacob's Creek, Yellow Tail and Rosemount; Generation Next, which studies new varieties, winemaking styles and packaging; Regional Heroes, an emphasis on the importance of regionality in Australia's winemaking scene; and Landmark, a showcase of Australia's premium wine.
