Police urge shops to help enforce ban
West Yorkshire police have appealed to retailers in rural areas of the district to work with them to keep alcohol away from under-18s.
The force’s Bingley & Worth Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team has launched a test-purchase operation in the Haworth area and has been patrolling a local park to seize alcohol from young people.
One Haworth retailer caught in the test-purchase sting was given a warning by West Yorkshire Trading Standards and will be subject to future monitoring.
Sergeant Chris Watson warned shops they could expect tougher action if problems caused by youths obtaining drink illegally didn’t improve.
“Young people drinking alcohol is a recipe for antisocial behaviour and I intend to continue working with our partners to target these offences,” he said.
“Shopkeepers in the area should be aware that these operations are ongoing and anyone found to be breaking the law will be dealt with firmly.”
