Following the success of House of Guinness, Netflix has announced another series dipping into the alcohol world.

Created by Darren Star, who worked on projects like Sex and the City and Emily in Paris, his new show, Uncorked, delves into the life of a female winemaker working in the Napa Valley.

In the making of the show, Star and his co-writer David Schulner have immersed themselves in the Napa Valley world, attending industry events like Auction Napa Valley and Premier Napa Valley.

On wanting to represent the region, Schulner said: “We’re diving straight into the legacy and romance of Napa Valley, where every great vintage has a unique story to tell.

“With Napa’s beauty and bounty as our setting, we hope the audience never wants to leave.”

In advance of the production, the trade association Napa Valley Vintners commented that the project offered a rare opportunity to reach millions of viewers as the wine market evolves and changes.

It said: “Through the global streaming platform, the series provides a high-profile way to encourage broader interest in wine and invite new audiences to explore and engage with it.”

At present, 4% of California’s wine grape harvest comes from Napa Valley, which boasts 33 different soil types.

The most common variety from the region is Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents 54% of production, followed by Chardonnay, which accounts for 12%.

Other grapes used include Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc.

According to the Napa Valley Vintners, the local wine industry and related businesses provide an annual economic impact of $11.7 billion locally and $36.7 billion in the U.S.
