Bordeaux-based cooperative Tutiac has completed a four-year trial of natural biopesticides in line with regional priorities to reduce the use of plant protection products.
In collaboration with research company ImmunRise Biocontrol, Tutiac tested a biopesticide based on Amphidinium carterae – a marine microalga with natural antifungal properties –with positive results.
Piloted primarily at Château Lambert in the Fronsac AOC, it was found that the biopesticide significantly reduced mildew and had notable effects on yield.
Using a conventional control plot as a reference, Tutiac revealed that the untreated control rows delivered 22% less yield, while the rows treated with the biopesticide achieved a 17% increase.
Emmanuelle Bordeille, winegrower at Château Lambert, said: “From the first year, we saw results. And in 2024 it was striking: where the untreated row had lost almost all its crop due to downy mildew, the row treated with ImmunRise performed very well.”
The trials at Tutiac were conducted within the framework of the Pest Off project, which is supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region.
The wider project aims to explore all positive alternatives in vineyards and wineries to reduce pesticide use. There are currently 30 trials being conducted around the region under the Pest Off project.
Tutiac began its focus on sustainable and organic viticulture over two decades ago. It produces certified organic wines on over 600 ha across 15 Bordeaux appellations.
