Morgenrot has boosted its craft beer portfolio with brews from a Barcelona-based brewery.

The Manchester-based beer and wine importer has secured the UK distribution rights for Catalonia’s BeerCat Brewery, which is known for its innovative, internationally-inspired brews. The brewery, which is based in Barcelona, claims to celebrate the finest raw ingredients and it then expresses its take on favourite beer styles from around the world.

The new agreement will see Morgenrot develop the craft brewer’s eclectic range of beers in the UK off-trade, kicking off with the launch of three 33cl flavour-rich ales, including the 4.2% abv La Masia, a twist on a traditional English bitter, brewed with the addition of five types of American and Australian hops; the 5% abv Barcelona Blonde, which is described as having a malty profile, balanced with the fruitiness of Citra and Galena hops; and the 6.3% Further Westward, a west coast IPA made with six different hops.

Morgenrot’s commercial director, John Critchley, said: “Our Spanish beer stable is a growing and profitable category for our company so we are delighted to strengthen it with the arrival of these special beers. Beautifully presented, the beers have heaps of flavour and with the Spanish and craft beer scene’s continuing to trend, we’re confident operators and consumers alike will appreciate the all-round quality of these remarkable beers.”

The BeerCat brewery was set up by Martina Molloy and Peter Bonner in 2012. The paid were originally from Dublin and London respectively, and they met while working as lawyers. In 2009 they took the plunge and moved to Spain with their two children, with the aim of following long-term real ale enthusiast Bonner’s dream of setting up a microbrewery.
