The Meantime Brewing Company has announced plans to close its Old Brewery restaurant and microbrewery at Greenwich’s Royal Naval College.

Meantime was founded in Greenwich in 2000.

The news follows the acquisition of Meantime by SABMiller in May this year.

At the time of the acquisition, the company announced plans for the opening of an innovation centre in Greenwich under the leadership of brew master Alastair Hook.

Meantime will now focus its new product development at its main brewery site.

It also plans to improve the consumer experience at its other retail outlets, among them The Tasting Rooms, which opened earlier this year, and the Beer Box at the O2 arena.

The brewery plans to create a minimum of 26 new small-batch beers each year.

There are currently ten bottled beers in the Meantime’s core range.

Nick Miller, Meantime’s chief executive, said:  “Since 2010, The Old Brewery restaurant has been a successful business and a great platform for us to engage with our followers and share great beer.

“However, it’s time to move on and for us to refocus our future retail plans. The restaurant has fantastic history and heritage and will always have a special place in the Meantime story, but at the same time we want to explore opportunities where our beer is the star of the show.

“We’ve made a strategic decision to move our innovation hub to our main brewery site. The new pilot brewery is set to be up and running at the end of November, replacing the microbrewery that was housed at The Old Brewery.  

“Bringing all our brewing under one roof at the main brewery has long been part of the plan – ensuring that our team have the best environment, technology and brewing capabilities with which to innovate, whilst continuing to work on our core range at the same time.”

Meantime will work together with The Royal Naval College to find a suitable buyer.

SABMiller recently accepted a £68 billion takeover bid from AB InBev to create the world’s largest brewing company.

The combined companies will be responsible for one in three beers sold worldwide.
