Australian winery Wirra Wirra has acquired a local Grenache vineyard which sits on 2.5 acres of land.
Based in Blewitt Springs in South Australia, Trott Vineyard was described by Wirra Wirra as one of Australia’s most significant Grenache sites.
Financial details haven’t been disclosed. However, it is known that the group will be buying the vineyard from its founder, Sue Trott.
Wirra Wirra said that the acquisition follows a long relationship between itself and the Trott family, born when Sue and Roger Trott helped to rebuild Wirra Wirra with Roger’s cousin Greg in 1969.
The Trott Vineyard itself was planted in 1952 and has since gained a reputation for creating Grenache of strong perfume, purity and structure.
Following the acquisition, the winery said it would honour the long-term agreement with Thistledown, which purchases half of the fruit from Trott Vineyard.
It continued that the two aim to position Trott Vineyard as one of the leading Grenache terroirs.
Matthew Deller, CEO of Wirra Wirra, commented: “Trott Vineyard is a rare asset in Australian wine. Its fruit produces a style of Grenache that stands comfortably alongside the great sites of the world.
“We are committed to protecting its identity and working with Thistledown, whose achievements with the vineyard have played a vital role in elevating McLaren Vale Grenache internationally.
“Given the exceptional quality of the fruit, the growing global reputation of McLaren Vale Grenache and the Trott, Wirra Wirra connection, it was an opportunity our family ownership could not let slip by.”
Meanwhile, Thistledown founder, Giles Cooke, said: “We have made single vineyard wines from Trott for 13 years, and its character defines Sands of Time.
“Working with Wirra Wirra secures the future of this site and allows us to accelerate its global recognition. Trott Vineyard deserves its place among the world’s leading expressions of Grenache.”
