Majestic Wines has given its staff an extra day of holiday today to kick off 2020, as a thank you for their hard work throughout 2019.
The gesture also reflects the company’s gratitude for staff patience during a “turbulent year” for the retailer.
The nationwide network of 195 stores is now closed until January 3, with more than 1,000 members of staff given an extra day of paid leave (on January 2) to kickstart the year.
Newly-appointed executive chairman and chief executive officer, John Colley, said: “If you speak to anyone about Majestic, it is usually our people, their local store teams, that come up in conversation first. That is because Majestic is a business which is built on our people – they are at the core of everything we stand for. They have had a difficult year with a lot of uncertainty, so I am delighted that we were able to give each of them an extra day to relax, and to raise a glass to the next chapter of Majestic’s history.”
Colley said it is too early to comment on Christmas trading but he indicated he was proud of the early signs under new private ownership.
“We will crunch the numbers when we get back into work, but I have been out on the shop floor right the way through December and the energy, enthusiasm and sheer hard work from our teams is there to see. I hope they enjoy a thoroughly well deserved extra day off in January – and I can’t wait to get cracking again in the New Year.”
