Wine retailer Majestic has appointed a former head of Sainsbury’s BWS category planning to the role of commercial director.

Elizabeth Newman will join the company in August from Nectar360, the loyalty, insights and media services agency owned by Sainsbury’s. Newman has served as Nectar360’s director of operations since January 2024, following almost 14 years at Sainsbury’s.

She joined the supermarket chain as a buyer in July 2010 and became head of category planning for beers, wines and spirits in January 2013, before being promoted to category director for BWS in 2015.

In her new role at Majestic, Newman will take on responsibility for Majestic’s buying, merchandising, trading and e-commerce functions. She will also join the retailer’s executive board, reporting directly to Majestic CEO, John Colley.

Colley said Newman “has an infectious passion for wine, and an incredible track record during her time at Sainsbury’s, where she was responsible for re-energising and reinvigorating their wine proposition”.

Newman added: “With their growth ambitions, award-winning team and unique position in the drinks market, this is an incredibly exciting time to be joining Majestic. The beers, wines and spirits category has always been close to my heart and I’m looking forward to returning to the sector.”

Newman’s appointment follows the recent departure of Rob Cooke, who joined Majestic as buying and merchandising director in April 2019, before becoming chief commercial officer at the start of 2020, and then COO in 2022.
