Lidl seized the title of Supermarket Own Branded Spirits Range of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in London last night.

The German discounter beat rivals Aldi and Sainsbury’s to the award after tasting success in the gin, brandy, liqueurs, Scotch, world whiskies and cognac categories.

Lidl’s head of BWS Ben Hulme said: “This is an incredible achievement and a great reward for all the hard work that has gone into delivering these top quality spirits. More and more people are recognising Lidl as a bona fide alcohol provider, with old preconceptions continuing to change all the time. This award helps to reinforce the growing trust and loyalty that the British public have in us.

Lejay Noir de Bourgogne was named Supreme Champion, and it is the third year running a Crème de Cassis has taken the top honour, after Dijon Gabriel Boudier was named Supreme Champion in 2013 and 2014.

The ceremony, hosted by OLN sister title Drinks International, was held at the Honourable Artillery Company in London.

It gave Nikka the Whisky Distiller of the Year award, while Jim McEwan of Bruichaladdich scooped the Lifetime Achievement Award and Glenmorangie’s Dr Bill Lumsden was named Master Blender/Distiller of the Year.

The ISC saw a record number of spirits and liqueurs tasted in 2015, with almost 1,300 entrants across 13 categories.

Trophies were awarded in all 11 spirits categories and Scotch was this year’s star performer with a total of six.
