Lancaster Spirits Co has announced Craig Drake as its new distillery manager, replacing Joan Casals, who has moved back to Europe after two years with the business.

Formed in 2022, the independent distillery said that the appointment of Drake marks a significant step as it progresses towards the launch of its first single malt whisky in 2027.

Located just outside the city of Lancaster, the distillery currently produces a selection of small-batch gin and vodka, both of which Drake will oversee in his new role.

With experience in spirits production, Lancaster Spirits said Drake has a strong track record in quality control, innovation and end-to-end distilling operations. He has worked in fermentation, distillation and cask management.

Prior to this role, Drake held positions at a series of drinks companies, including Adnams Brewery and Copper House Distillery, alongside G&J Distillers.

Lancaster Spirits said that Drake will continue to ensure the highest standards at the distillery, including a unique approach to spirits production, in which the team creates its own neutral grain spirit by distilling beer.

On his new role, Drake said: “I’m looking forward to being part of Lancaster Spirits Company at such an exciting stage, and to working alongside one of the world’s leading single malt whisky experts, Max McFarlane.”

Christopher Pateman, commercial manager, added: “I’m really pleased Craig has joined the team at this point as we progress towards the release of our first single malt in 2027. This is a rare opportunity, and one he has fully embraced, to be part of our story from the very beginning.”
