Jancis Robinson MW is the UK’s most influential wine writer when it comes to impacting upon sales in-store, according to our reader survey. 

We asked 150 wine retailers across the UK whose recommendations have the greatest effect in driving sales in their shops. 

The retailers admitted it was difficult to measure, but Robinson was the clear leader when they gave their votes. They said shoppers appreciated her recommendations and that they had an impact on their buying choices too. 

Robinson runs her eponymous website and has a column in the Financial Times, while she also appears on TV as part of The Wine Show’s team. 

After Robinson it was a tight contest, but Matthew Jukes emerged as the second most influential writer for the wine merchants we surveyed. 

Jukes writes a Daily Mail column and his Top 100 Australian wine selection is well received among independent retailers. 

While writing is only one string to his bow, The Wine Show star Joe Fattorini was third in our survey. He has recently scooped plenty of communicator of the year awards and has emerged as something of a wine trade celebrity. 

The Times columnist Jane MacQuitty came fourth in our poll, followed by another celebrity in Oz Clarke. 

Tim Atkin MW was sixth in the list. He runs an eponymous website, writes high-profile category reports on various countries and features in a range of publications. Some retailers also put the Three Wine Men – Atkin, Clarke and Olly Smith – together as an important and influential collective. 

Smith was eighth in the poll, with Wine Anorak writer Jamie Goode in seventh. The Telegraph columnist and author Victoria Moore was ninth and Stephen Spurrier completed the top 10.
