The Zuccardi family from Mendoza, Argentina, has appointed Hatch Mansfield as its exclusive UK agent for Bodega Zuccardo Valle de Uco.

Hatch Mansfield will take over distribution from Alliance wine, and will handle all of the Zuccardi ranges from October 1 this year. Watermill Wines will continue to distribute the wines coming from the family’s Bodega Santa Julia.

Familia Zuccardo was founded in the 1960s by Alberto Zuccardi, an engineer whop pioneered the development of high-quality vineyards in the desert sites of Mendoza. He was joined by his son, José Alberto, who was awarded International Wine Challenge’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, and by his grandson, Sebastian Zuccardi, who was recognised by Decanter magazine as the number one top winemaker in South America, in March 2019.

Sebastian aims to challenge preconceptions, making terroir-driven wines from vineyards in the Uco Valley. At the same time be acknowledges Argentinian traditions. He is not only working with Malbec but also Bonarda, which he is actively planting in even cooler zones.

Patrick McGrath MW, managing director, Hatch Mansfield, said: “Argentina has been a notable gap in our portfolio and we are delighted to be representing Zuccardi. They are a perfect addition to our portfolio in our 25th anniversary year. As pioneers in the region, they are recognised as producing sublime wines of the highest quality.

“They have a full tier of qualities offering something for every type of customer and consumer. We can see a huge opportunity for their wines in this market and look forward to building their business and profile in the UK. We already have some exciting plans in the pipeline.”

José Alberto, Familia Zuccardi’s managing director, said: “Our company is evolving fast in many exciting ways, and the chance to ally ourselves with such a great portfolio of wines as Hatch Mansfield’s will see a union of shared philosophies and a meeting of kindred spirits, and my whole family are hugely excited to be working with them.

“We have a strong history in the UK and we are very grateful to Alliance for all their efforts. This is a strategic move to expand our presence in this key market.”

Zuccardi joins the Hatch Mansfield portfolio of wines, which includes Champagne Taittinger, Louis Jadot, Terroirs et Talents, Joseph Mellot, Jean Luc Colombo, CVNE, Viña Errazuriz, Caliterra, Domaine Carneros, Robert Oatley, Villa Maria, Esk Valley, Vidal, Leftfield, Kleine Zalze – and most recently Gaja.
