In an updated version of its Eco Standard 2025, Hallgarten & Novum has named eight suppliers as sustainability ‘champions’.
The champions were judged on Hallgarten’s four sustainability pillars: Environment, Energy Management, Water & Waste Management and Social Responsibility. Within these, a small and large supplier was picked for each pillar.
Alois Lageder was named large winery Environment champion. Located in the Alto Adige region, the winery has a goal to create an agricultural environment that is one with nature. Donkeys, sheep and cattle graze between vines, and drip irrigation systems are used, controlled to ensure minimum water usage.
Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi in Greece was announced small supplier Environment champion. The winery was formed in 1997 to revive the production of Malvasia wine in its birthplace and is committed to showcasing the indigenous varieties of the region.
For Energy Management, Tikveš Winery from North Macedonia was dubbed large winery champion. The winery is fully gravitational and equipped with solar panels offering a capacity of 1.6 MW.
In the same category, Lomond Wines from South Africa won small supplier champion. Lomond is close to being off-grid on the farm, with 60% of the winery operating off-grid during the harvest period.
Saint Clair from New Zealand was awarded Water and Waste Management large supplier champion. The winery has implemented a system to reuse leftover refrigeration power to heat water throughout the site.
Alpha Estate from Greece was named Water and Waste Management small supplier champion. The estate uses rainwater capture and reservoir systems that service most of the vineyard area.
For Social Responsibility, Peninsula Viticultores from Spain was nominated as large supplier champion. The winery became the first in Spain to be certified under the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection programme by the Spanish Wine Federation in 2023.
Château Oumsiyat from Lebanon was recognised as the small supplier Social Responsibility champion.
Finally, Villa Noria from the Languedoc region was named as overall ‘Champion of Champions’ for its commitment across all four pillars. The winery was previously named as both an Energy Management and Social Responsibility champion in 2023. This year, it received the overall highest score out of all producers.
