Gravity Drinks is launching a range of premium tequilas into the UK, with the initial trio of drinks each packaged in bottles inspired by Mexico’s renowned Lucha Libra.

The Mucha Liga range represents three distinct “personalities” of tequila: Bravo (blanco), Canibal (reposado) and Invicto (anejo).

The range comes from the La Cienega region of Jalisco in Mexico, from the Juanacatlan Distillery. The three tequilas combine contemporary design with traditional tequila-distillation methods, with each grown and distilled using 100% Blue Weber Agave grown 1,530 metres above sea level.

The higher elevation leads to more sunlight, meaning more residual sugars in the agave, resulting in a slightly sweeter, more flavoursome tequila.

The heart of the agave (pina) is harvested by hand when it reaches between six and ten years of age. These are cooked in traditional brick ovens for at least 48 hours. The juices are then extracted and fermented for up to 96 hours in open air tanks using a specially crafted yeast.

This is then twice-distilled in traditional pot stills, creating the blanco tequila, which is used as the base for each expression. Both the reposado and anejo are aged in ex-bourbon, American white oak barrels for up to six months and 18 months respectively.

Mucha Liga is launching exclusively into the UK (and EU) with London-based distributor Gravity Drinks.

Managing director, Matthew Maslin, said: “We are thrilled to be launching Mucha Liga into the UK market.

“It is no secret that agave-based spirits like tequila and mescal are on the up-and-up in the UK. And Mucha Liga ticks all the boxes for today’s tequila-lover; it’s traditional, high-quality tequila in a fantastic eye-catching bottle with a refreshingly modern attitude towards sustainability and gender equality. What’s not to love?”

Mucha Liga is also an industry leader in creating and holding job roles that empower women. The company said 95% of its employees are female, including its chairwoman and senior management.

Mucha Liga Tequila has already secured listings with Harvey Nichols, Master of Malt, DrinkSupermarket and Amazon.

Mucha Liga “Brava” Blanco (rsp: £42.95) is tequila in its purest form “unkissed by any barrel”.

Mucha Liga “Canibal” Reposado (rrp: 47.95) is seasoned in America white-oak, ex-bourbon barrels for six months. It is described as having “subtle notes of caramel and blue agave”.

Mucha Liga “Invicto” Anejo (rsp: £51.95) is aged for 18 months in ex-bourbon, white American oak barrels. The company said it is “a seductive and experienced expression of our familia”.
